What Makes Us Think Our Decals Are So Special?
Feb 17, 2026
You have probably noticed the increasing number of wall decals on the market over the last few years (we certainly have) and what is obvious is that very few stores go to the lengths that we do to make sure their decals are the very best they can be.
We understand the allure of decals that appear to offer brilliant value, but there is a fair chance that also means they are making them using cheaper materials and also probably spending less time making them.
In short, that doesn't sound too terrible, but in reality, when you are putting those decals up in your little one's room, it is worth considering. Anyway, let's cut to the chase.
Everything we use to make our decals has been fully safety tested. No PVC, BPAs, VOCs, Phthalates or toxins of any kind.
Premium Adhesive Fabric
Fire safe material
Much like many high end wallpapers, we use a special kind of finely woven polyester. We have never changed our material because it is the best you can buy. It is has been fully tested for everything you would hope for, including toxins and lead (in the fabric, the coating and the adhesive) which is why hospitals and NICU's trust our decals. When you see other fabric decals on the market, if they are cheap, we would urge you ask the seller whether it has been fully tested.
The other consideration with these kinds of fabrics is how long lasting the adhesive is. We have looked at alternatives in the past and none of them have anything like the same lifespan as ours. Whilst our decals are so easy to add and change as an instant refresh, our expectation is that they should for many years if a customer wants them to. The other fabrics we see being used are essentially the equivalent of fast fashion - easy up and easy down, and are designed to be replaced in the not too distant future.
Finally, the matt finish of the fabric is the perfect partner to our inks, allowing intricate details and vibrant colours to really sing. The subtle woven texture is so well suited to our artwork that it feels as though it has been painted straight onto the wall.
High Tack or Standard?
Why do other stores not offer this?
The truth is that it adds complexity to selling decals. We spend a lot of time checking with customers and helping them get the best decals for their walls. They are also more difficult to make and on top of that, the high tack fabric is more expensive too. So all in all it's not a very attractive business prospect. But, in order for us to have consistently happy customers, it's essential, and that's what matters to us above everything else.
For the first few years of making decals we only used our standard material. But over time it became apparent that there were certain situations where this just didn't work for people. In order for our standard decals to be truly gentle on walls, it meant they would not have the strength of adhesive to work well with the a number of increasingly popular paint types on the market. Stain resistant paints continue to be ever more prominent, and so the number of people with harder-to-stick-to surfaces (Dulux Wash n Wear etc) has increased massively over recent years. More info about High Tack and when to use it is in our Info and Guides section or grab some samples to test.
As an aside, we find it quite incredible how popular these paints are, especially given the well documented concerns with forever chemicals and compounds (such as Teflon) that seem to often be used in these paints. It is something we are massively aware of as a company making products for little ones and will do all we can to check everything for these substances.
Water Based Pigment Inks
Archival Quality
We print our decals using a range of twelve beautiful inks that allow us to reproduce our hand painted designs perfectly - whether it's soft, watercolour tones perfect for nurseries or the fun, vibrant colours we've become well known for. Our high quality pigments have excellent fade resistance and continue to look beautiful for years to come.
To evidence this we recently received an email from a customer who had added some of our rainbow watercolour dots to their shed. They were bored of looking at the same expanse of grey and decided to give it a glow up! Anyway, years later, and a couple of summer's of Western Australian sunshine and the rainbow dots are still as happy and colourful as ever.
Many decals on the market are printed using solvent and UV inks. Which means that instead of the liquid part of the ink being water, it is either solvent or petroleum based. Generally these do not use the same quality of pigments as we do and they are much more harmful for the environment. Look out for decals made with solvent inks in particular, as these contain VOCs when they are new, which will leach out into the air over time.
Hand Finished
This means they are always perfect quality and 100% ready to use
You may notice that when you receive your sheets of decals from us that they look different to others you have seen. One of the reasons is that we hand-weed our decals before sending them out.
What on earth is hand-weeding?
I'm so pleased you asked! Once our decals have been cut using a die-cutter (this is a process where a machine with a tiny blade follows die-lines around the decal design) we peel away all the fabric from around the decals, rather than leaving it on the sheet.
The reason this makes life so much easier as a customer is that, die-cutting this kind of material is not guaranteed to be 100% perfect. There are sometimes tiny variations in the threads or certain details where the blade will miss a few fibres. You can't see this when you look at the cut sheet, but when you try to peel the decals off the sheet, the fibres that aren't fully cut will snag and pull, potentially ruining the decal or meaning you'll have to hand trim the decals as you go. In hand-weeding every section, we do this bit for you, using a scalpel where necessary to make sure the cuts are always perfect.
10 Years of Experience - 50,000 decals
Our small team has now been making decals for a decade
In this time we have learnt a lot! We also love what we do more than ever and put a lot of love into every order we fulfil.
Whilst we're not as interested in stats as we are in making beautiful wall decals, we recently realised that we've now made more than 50,000 decals - all designed, made and hand finished by our small team. Knowing that our decals are on little ones' walls all around the world is everything to us and we look forward to the next 50,000!
